About the embassy
About the Embassy of Canada to Laos
The Canadian Embassy in Vientiane is Canada’s resident diplomatic mission in Laos.
Canada and the Lao People’s Democratic Republic established diplomatic relations in 1974. Canada has maintained a diplomatic presence in Vientiane since 2015.
In March 2025, as part of Canada’s Indo-Pacific Strategy, the Canadian mission in Vientiane was upgraded to a full embassy. The mission supports political, development, cultural and commercial cooperation between Canada and Laos and provides consular services to Canadian citizens.

Passport services
Canadian citizens can apply for passport services through the embassy. Applicants must book an appointment to present their documents in person and pay the applicable fees online.
Citizenship services
Eligible paper applications for proof of Canadian citizenship can be mailed to the embassy or dropped off during published Consular Services hours.
Notarial services
The embassy provides selected notarial services by appointment, including eligible certified copies, signature witnessing and authentication-related services.
Marriage abroad
The embassy can witness a signature on a statement in lieu of a certificate of non-impediment to marriage abroad when applicable.
Emergency assistance
Emergency consular assistance is available 24 hours a day through Canada’s Emergency Watch and Response Centre. The embassy currently reports a disruption affecting its own after-hours telephone service.
