About the Norwegian Embassy in Ottawa

The Royal Norwegian Embassy in Ottawa is Norway’s resident diplomatic mission in Canada.

The Embassy was established in Ottawa in 1949. Its main role is to promote Norwegian interests in Canada and further develop relations between Norway and Canada.

The mission also provides consular services to Norwegian citizens in Canada, including biometric passport applications, citizenship-related procedures and selected notarial services.

Norway also maintains a network of honorary consulates across Canada. However, regular Norwegian passport applications can no longer be submitted through honorary consulates.

The Embassy in Ottawa is the application location for regular Norwegian biometric passports in Canada.

All regular passport applicants in Canada must apply in person at the Royal Norwegian Embassy in Ottawa. Passport applications are no longer accepted at Norway’s honorary consulates in Canada.

Applicants must arrange an appointment in advance by contacting the Embassy at emb.ottawa@mfa.no.

The Embassy takes the applicant’s passport photograph using its own biometric equipment. Applicants aged over 10 provide a signature, while applicants aged over 12 provide a signature and two fingerprints.

All passport applicants must have a Norwegian personal identification number. Additional requirements apply to children and first-time applicants.

Children must also attend: All applicants, including children, must apply for a regular passport at the Embassy in Ottawa. Check the requirements for parental consent and supporting documents before travelling.

Emergency passports

Norwegian citizens who need to travel urgently and cannot use a regular passport should contact the Embassy or their nearest Norwegian consular office and provide their full name, date of birth and travel details.

An emergency-passport application must be submitted in person. Applicants must provide proof of travel, identification and passport photographs meeting the required standards.

Travel and immigration

Norway Visas and Residence Permits

Visa and residence-permit applications from Canada are not processed by the Royal Norwegian Embassy in Ottawa.

The Royal Norwegian Consulate General in New York is responsible for visa and residence-permit applications from Canada and the wider Americas region.

Applicants residing legally in Canada submit their applications through VFS Global. The application centre forwards the documentation to the Consulate General in New York for processing.

Canadian citizens holding a valid Canadian passport can visit Norway for qualifying stays of up to 90 days without a visa. The usual Schengen conditions and 90-days-in-any-180-day-period limit apply.

Travellers planning to work, study, join family or stay for more than the permitted short-stay period should check whether they require a Norwegian residence permit.

Immigration enquiries: Visa and residence-permit applicants should contact VFS Global or use the official Norwegian immigration information. The Embassy in Ottawa is not involved in processing these applications.
