New Zealand also maintains a Consulate-General in Vancouver and honorary consular representation in Calgary and Toronto.

Consular assistance

Consular Services

The High Commission provides consular assistance to New Zealand citizens in Canada, while several government services are administered directly by the responsible authorities in New Zealand.

Emergency assistance

New Zealand citizens in Canada can contact the High Commission for consular assistance in serious emergencies such as accidents, arrests, hospitalisation or other situations where consular support may be appropriate.

In certain circumstances, High Commission staff can witness affidavits, affirmations, statutory declarations and other documents intended for use under New Zealand law.

Documents for use in New Zealand

Notarial Services

The High Commission can provide selected notarial services in circumstances where New Zealand consular staff are authorised to act.

The Ministry of Foreign Affairs and Trade states that High Commission staff can, in certain circumstances, witness affidavits, affirmations, statutory declarations and other documents for use under New Zealand law.

Applicants should contact the consular staff before visiting to confirm whether the High Commission can perform the particular service required and to obtain information about the applicable fee.

An appointment is required for these services.

Check before travelling: Consular officers cannot provide every type of legal or notarial service. Send details of the document and its intended use to the High Commission before arranging a visit.

New Zealand travel documents

New Zealand Passports

New Zealand passport applications from Canada are handled through New Zealand’s central passport service rather than as a routine passport-application service at the High Commission.

New Zealand citizens overseas can normally apply for a passport using the official New Zealand Passports service.

Applicants who cannot use the online process can follow the alternative application instructions provided by the Department of Internal Affairs. Postal or courier applications from countries such as Canada are sent to the New Zealand Passport Office using the current address and procedure published by New Zealand Passports.

For urgent travel or problems involving an existing passport application, applicants should contact New Zealand Passports directly. The High Commission can provide consular assistance where appropriate but does not replace the Department of Internal Affairs passport service.

Do not send a routine passport application to the High Commission: Check the current New Zealand Passports instructions and use the application method specified by the Department of Internal Affairs.

Travel to New Zealand

NZeTA and Entry Requirements

Canadian citizens are covered by New Zealand’s visa-waiver arrangements for qualifying short visits, but they normally need a New Zealand Electronic Travel Authority before travelling.

Canada is currently included on New Zealand’s official list of visa-waiver countries and territories.

A Canadian citizen travelling on a Canadian passport for an eligible short visit therefore does not normally apply for a Visitor Visa before departure. Instead, the traveller must obtain an NZeTA before travelling unless another exemption applies.

An NZeTA is generally valid for two years for travellers and can be used for multiple trips while valid. For Canadian visitors using the visa-waiver system, an individual visit can generally be for up to three months.

An NZeTA is not itself a visa. If the traveller meets the requirements and receives entry permission at the New Zealand border, a Visa Waiver Visitor Visa is granted on arrival.

Travellers must also complete a New Zealand Traveller Declaration and meet the applicable passport, onward-travel, funds, health and character requirements.

Longer stays and other purposes: Travellers planning to work, live or study in New Zealand beyond the permitted visitor conditions need the appropriate visa. Immigration applications are handled by Immigration New Zealand rather than the High Commission.
