Mongolian Passports and Return Certificates

Mongolian citizens permanently residing in Canada can apply for a new national passport through the Embassy in Ottawa.

The Embassy currently accepts qualifying passport applications either in person or by mail. Applicants must provide the documents required for their circumstances, including an application addressed to the Embassy and the applicable identity and supporting documents.

A replacement passport can be requested when a passport has expired, been lost or damaged, has run out of pages or otherwise meets the conditions for replacement published by the Embassy.

The Embassy also issues Return Certificates to eligible Mongolian citizens who need temporary travel documentation to return to Mongolia.

Applicants unable to attend personally may be able to submit a Return Certificate application by registered mail when the Embassy’s requirements are met. A prepaid, self-addressed, trackable return envelope should be included where postal return is requested.

Temporary travel documents: A Return Certificate is intended to enable an eligible Mongolian citizen to return to Mongolia. Check transit-country requirements carefully because it is not equivalent to an ordinary passport for general international travel.

Travel to Mongolia

Mongolia Visas and Visa-Free Travel

Visa requirements for Mongolia depend on nationality, travel purpose and intended length of stay.

Canadian citizens holding Canadian passports are currently exempt from a Mongolian visa for qualifying official, private-business or tourism stays of up to 30 days.

For stays exceeding 30 days, or for certain double-entry, multiple-entry, work, study, business or private visa categories, prior approval from the Immigration Agency of Mongolia may be required before the Embassy can issue the visa.

For applicants who require a visa for a stay of 30 days or less, the Embassy publishes procedures for applications submitted by mail or in person.

Mongolia also operates an official electronic visa system for eligible nationalities and visa categories. Applicants should check their eligibility through the government eVisa system before submitting an Embassy application.

Canadian passport holders: The Embassy’s current visa guidance confirms visa-free entry for qualifying stays of up to 30 days. Longer stays and activities such as work or study have different requirements.
