About the mission

About the Netherlands Embassy in Ottawa

The Embassy of the Kingdom of the Netherlands in Ottawa is the Netherlands‘ resident diplomatic mission in Canada.

The Embassy represents the Netherlands in its official relations with Canada and supports political, economic, commercial, cultural and other cooperation between the two countries.

The Ottawa mission also provides selected consular services. The Netherlands maintains Consulates General in Toronto and Vancouver and uses external service locations for certain passport, identity-card and visa applications in Canada.

Consular procedures are coordinated through the Dutch government’s NetherlandsWorldwide service, which provides the current requirements, personal document checklists and appointment information.

Consular assistance

Consular Services

The Embassy in Ottawa provides selected consular services for Dutch citizens and other eligible applicants.

Dutch citizens living in Canada can apply for a Dutch passport at the Embassy in Ottawa by appointment, provided they meet the applicable nationality and documentary requirements.

Dutch ID cards

Eligible Dutch citizens can also apply for a Dutch identity card at the Embassy. Applicants must complete the required checklist and attend their appointment in person.

Emergency travel documents

Dutch citizens who need to travel urgently and cannot use their passport may contact the Embassy regarding an emergency travel document. The Embassy first reviews the required documents and travel information.

Certificates of life

The Embassy can provide eligible certificate-of-life services where personal verification is required.

Visa-related services

Most standard Schengen visa applications in Canada are submitted through VFS Global rather than directly at the Embassy. The Embassy remains involved in specific visa and immigration procedures.

Different application locations: Depending on the service, applicants may be able to use the Embassy in Ottawa, a Dutch Consulate General or an authorised VFS Global location. Check the current NetherlandsWorldwide instructions before choosing where to apply.

Planning your visit

Consular Appointments

Consular visits to the Embassy are appointment-based.

For passport and Dutch ID-card applications, applicants should first complete the NetherlandsWorldwide document checklist and gather all required originals and supporting documents.

An appointment can then be booked for the Embassy in Ottawa. Separate appointments are required when the same applicant is applying for both a passport and an ID card.

Visa applications use different appointment procedures. Standard Schengen visa applicants in Canada make their appointments through VFS Global.

Arrive prepared: The Dutch authorities state that applicants should bring every document on their personal checklist. An application may not be accepted if required documents are missing.

Dutch travel documents

Dutch Passports and ID Cards

Dutch citizens residing in Canada can apply for passports and identity cards through several official locations.

Applications can be made by appointment at the Embassy in Ottawa or at the Dutch Consulates General in Toronto and Vancouver.

Authorised VFS Global locations in Canada also accept eligible Dutch passport and ID-card applications. Current NetherlandsWorldwide information lists VFS application locations in Toronto, Vancouver and Edmonton.

Applicants must appear in person and provide the documents identified by the official personal checklist.

Special rules apply when a previous passport or ID card has been lost or stolen. If the applicant does not have a photocopy of the lost or stolen document, the Dutch authorities currently require the application to be made at the Embassy in Ottawa or a Consulate General in Toronto or Vancouver rather than through VFS Global.

Personal attendance: Dutch passport and ID-card applications are in-person procedures. Check the official checklist and appointment availability before travelling to an application location.

Travel to the Netherlands

Netherlands Visas

Whether a traveller needs a visa for the Netherlands depends on nationality, travel document and the purpose and duration of the stay.

Canadian passport holders do not need a visa for qualifying short visits to the Netherlands.

Travellers who do require a short-stay Schengen visa and reside in Canada currently submit their applications through VFS Global application centres in Ottawa, Toronto, Vancouver or Edmonton.

Applicants must make an appointment and appear in person. The application normally includes the required supporting documents, passport and biometric information.

The Netherlands also has separate procedures for long-stay immigration and MVV visa stickers. Applicants who have received the appropriate approval should follow the specific NetherlandsWorldwide instructions for Canada.

Do not send a standard Schengen visa application directly to the Embassy: The current procedure for applicants resident in Canada uses VFS Global application centres, except for specific procedures for which the Dutch authorities provide different instructions.
