About the mission

About the Vietnamese Embassy in Ottawa

The Embassy of the Socialist Republic of Vietnam in Ottawa is Viet Nam’s resident diplomatic mission in Canada.

The Embassy represents Viet Nam in its official relations with Canada and works to develop political, economic, cultural and other bilateral relations.

The mission also provides consular services for Vietnamese citizens and eligible applicants in Canada.

Vietnamese travel documents

Vietnamese Passport Services in Ottawa

The Embassy processes eligible passport applications for Vietnamese citizens residing in Canada.

Passport procedures depend on whether the applicant is applying for a first passport, renewing or replacing an existing passport, or requires verification of Vietnamese citizenship.

Since April 1, 2026, the Embassy in Ottawa has accepted applications for Vietnamese electronic ordinary passports containing an electronic chip.

Applicants choosing a chip-enabled passport must attend the Embassy personally so that biometric information can be collected and the applicant’s identity can be verified.

Eligible applicants can instead choose a passport without an electronic chip. The Embassy states that both types of passport have the same legal validity.

Chip-enabled passports are not currently issued to children under 14 years of age.

Where an eligible passport application is submitted by mail and the applicant does not attend the Embassy for biometric enrolment, the Embassy issues a passport without an electronic chip.

Electronic passport applicants: Personal attendance at the Embassy is required for biometric enrolment when applying for a Vietnamese passport with an electronic chip.

Documents for use in Viet Nam

Apostille and Document Services

The procedure for Canadian public documents intended for use in Viet Nam changed in September 2026.

The Apostille Convention entered into force between Canada and Viet Nam on September 11, 2026.

As a result, eligible Canadian public documents that receive an apostille from the competent Canadian authority generally no longer require additional consular legalisation by the Vietnamese Embassy for use in Viet Nam.

The competent Canadian authority depends on where the document was issued or notarised. Depending on the document, the apostille may be issued by Global Affairs Canada or the designated provincial authority.

Applicants should determine which Canadian authority is responsible for their document before requesting an apostille.

Important change: Since September 11, 2026, eligible Canadian documents can use an apostille instead of the former consular legalisation procedure. Check whether your particular document falls within the Apostille Convention before submitting it.

Travel to Viet Nam

Vietnam Visa and E-Visa Information

Canadian passport holders can use Viet Nam’s electronic visa system for qualifying travel.

Viet Nam makes electronic visas available to foreign travellers through the official Immigration Department e-Visa portal.

A Vietnamese e-Visa can currently be valid for a maximum of 90 days and can be issued for either single or multiple entry.

The current official e-Visa fee is USD 25 for a single-entry visa and USD 50 for a multiple-entry visa. The Immigration Department states that the application is normally processed within three working days.

Electronic visas are issued by the Vietnam Immigration Department, not by the Embassy in Ottawa.

Physical visas issued by the Embassy

The Embassy also maintains procedures for applicable physical visas. These are separate from the Immigration Department’s e-Visa system.

The Embassy currently states that passports submitted for its physical visa procedure should be valid for at least six months at the time of entry into Viet Nam.

Use official websites: Viet Nam’s official electronic visa portal is operated by the Immigration Department. Avoid private websites that imitate government visa services or charge additional intermediary fees.
