Ugandan travel documents
Ugandan Passport Services in Ottawa
Uganda operates an e-Passport enrolment centre at its High Commission in Ottawa.
Eligible applicants begin the passport process through Uganda’s official passport system. After completing the required online steps and payment, the applicant schedules an appointment and attends the mission in person for biometric enrolment.
Uganda’s immigration authority states that missions abroad handle passport renewals, replacements and new passport applications for children of Ugandans in the diaspora.
The Ottawa e-Passport centre was established so eligible Ugandans living in Canada could complete passport enrolment without travelling to Uganda.
Lost passports
Different rules apply when a Ugandan passport has been lost. Uganda’s Directorate of Citizenship and Immigration Control states that replacement of a lost passport by a Ugandan living abroad must currently be completed in Uganda rather than at the overseas mission.
Important: Do not assume that every passport case can be completed in Ottawa. In particular, Uganda currently requires replacement of lost passports to be handled in Uganda. Check your application category before booking travel to the High Commission.
Official documents
Academic and Legal Document Verification
Uganda provides formal verification procedures for eligible academic, legal and administrative documents.
Academic-document procedures can involve original certificates or transcripts, certified copies, identification and verification by the appropriate Ugandan issuing or educational authority.
Other eligible documents can include passports, national identity documents, driving permits, birth and death certificates and translations.
Legal documents such as marriage certificates, company documents and adoption records have their own issuing-authority and certification requirements.
Documents originating outside Uganda for use in Uganda can also require certification by the appropriate diplomatic mission before further processing.
Check the document type: Verification requirements depend on the issuing authority and the type of document. Review the current official instructions before sending originals or certified copies.
Travel to Uganda
Uganda Visa Information for Canadian Travellers
Canadian citizens currently require a visa to travel to Uganda.
Canada is not included in Uganda’s current list of visa-exempt nationalities. Canadian passport holders therefore normally need to obtain the appropriate immigration authorization before travel.
Uganda requires visa-prone travellers to submit applications through its official online immigration system. Travellers should obtain their visa approval or travel authorization before beginning their journey rather than relying on a visa being issued on arrival.
Tourist visa
Uganda’s current single-entry Tourist Visa can be granted for up to three months and currently costs USD 50.
The published tourist requirements include a passport bio-data page with at least six months‘ validity, a recent passport photograph, travel itinerary and accommodation information.
The visa approval authorization itself is valid for 90 days from approval. Travellers should therefore enter Uganda within that period.
East African Tourist Visa
Travellers planning to visit Uganda, Kenya and Rwanda can also consider the East African Tourist Visa. It is valid for 90 days, permits multiple travel within the participating countries for tourism and currently costs USD 100.
The country issuing the East African Tourist Visa should be the traveller’s first point of entry into the participating area.
Canadian travellers: Apply through Uganda’s official immigration system before travel. Canada is not currently listed among Uganda’s visa-exempt countries.
