Planning your visit
Consular Appointments
Mexico uses the official MiConsulado system to schedule appointments for many consular services.
Passport applicants must make an appointment through MiConsulado. Appointments can be requested online or through the telephone appointment service published by the Mexican authorities.
Each applicant needs an individual appointment. If several members of the same family require passports or other appointment-based services, a separate appointment may be necessary for each person.
Visa applicants who require an in-person application also use MiConsulado to select the required procedure and the Mexican embassy or consulate where they will appear.
Appointments are free: Use Mexico’s official MiConsulado system and avoid third parties claiming to sell or guarantee consular appointments.

Consular Jurisdiction in Canada
Mexico divides consular responsibility in Canada among the Embassy’s Consular Section and several career consulates.
The Embassy’s current directory identifies the Consular Section in Ottawa with the Ottawa–Gatineau area.
Other Mexican career consular offices have defined territorial responsibilities, including:
- Toronto: Ontario and Manitoba, subject to the separate responsibility of the Consulate in Leamington.
- Montreal: Quebec, Nova Scotia, New Brunswick, Newfoundland and Labrador, Prince Edward Island and Nunavut.
- Vancouver: British Columbia, Yukon and the Northwest Territories.
- Calgary: Alberta and Saskatchewan.
- Leamington: southern Essex County in Ontario.
Document legalisation: The Embassy in Ottawa publishes separate nationwide authority for eligible Canadian documents from any province or territory. Because Canada’s Apostille Convention status changed in 2024, check the current document procedure before relying on older legalisation instructions.
Travel to Mexico
Mexican Visas
Whether a traveller needs a Mexican visa depends on nationality, immigration status, purpose of travel and intended length of stay.
Canadian citizens travelling with valid Canadian passports do not normally require a Mexican visa for qualifying visitor travel.
Foreign nationals who do require a Mexican visa should review the visa category that applies to their circumstances before requesting an appointment.
The Embassy publishes procedures for visitor visas, temporary and permanent residence visas and other eligible immigration categories. In-person visa appointments are requested through the official MiConsulado system.
A Mexican visa does not itself guarantee admission to Mexico. Final admission is determined by the Mexican immigration authorities at the port of entry.
Check current requirements: Visa rules can depend on nationality and on valid visas or permanent-resident status held in certain other countries. Review the current Mexican government requirements before applying.
