About the Slovak Embassy in Ottawa

The Embassy of the Slovak Republic in Ottawa is Slovakia’s resident diplomatic mission in Canada.

The Embassy represents and protects the interests of the Slovak Republic and its citizens in Canada and supports political, economic, cultural, academic and other cooperation between Slovakia and Canada.

The Embassy also serves Slovakia’s large expatriate community in Canada and provides consular services throughout the country.

Its Consular Section handles eligible passport, citizenship, civil-registration, visa, residence and document-related procedures.

Consular Appointments

An appointment is required to visit the Consular Section and personally submit an application.

The Embassy states that applications requiring personal submission are accepted only with a pre-booked appointment.

Current public consular hours are Monday and Wednesday from 9:00 a.m. to 4:15 p.m. and Friday from 9:00 a.m. to 3:00 p.m.. Tuesday and Thursday are not public counter days.

Telephone enquiries are currently handled Monday and Wednesday from 1:00 p.m. to 4:00 p.m. and Tuesday and Thursday from 9:00 a.m. to noon.

Do not arrive without confirmation: Consular counter hours do not mean that walk-in applications are accepted. Arrange and confirm the required appointment before travelling to the Embassy.

Slovak travel documents

Slovak Passport Services

Eligible Slovak citizens in Canada can submit applications for biometric Slovak passports through the Embassy.

Applicants must be able to demonstrate Slovak citizenship with an accepted document such as a valid Slovak passport, valid Slovak identity card, valid Slovak Citizenship Certificate or other qualifying confirmation of citizenship.

If the applicant cannot provide an accepted current document proving Slovak citizenship, a Slovak Citizenship Certificate or other applicable confirmation may need to be obtained before a new passport application can proceed.

Biometric applications

A photograph is captured as part of the biometric passport application process. Fingerprints and an electronic signature are also collected from applicants where required by the applicable age rules.

Applicants should bring the original documents required for their particular application as well as any copies requested by the Consular Section.

Personal application: A biometric passport application requires the applicant to attend the consular office so the necessary identity and biometric procedures can be completed.

Slovak nationality matters

Slovak Citizenship Services

The Embassy provides several citizenship-related procedures for eligible applicants in Canada.

A Slovak Citizenship Certificate can be used to prove Slovak citizenship when an applicant does not have another accepted current document establishing citizenship.

The Embassy also publishes procedures concerning acquisition, loss and reacquisition of Slovak citizenship.

Slovakia additionally provides a citizenship-by-descent route for qualifying applicants. Current rules can permit an application based on a parent, grandparent or great-grandparent who meets the applicable historical connection to Czechoslovakia.

Citizenship applications can require original civil-status documents, criminal-record documents and other evidence. Canadian documents may require an Apostille and an official Slovak translation depending on the procedure.

Requirements vary substantially: Citizenship procedures depend on the legal basis of the application and the applicant’s family and citizenship history. Check the current service-specific requirements before preparing documents.

Travel to Slovakia

Slovakia Visa Information for Canadian Travellers

Canadian passport holders currently benefit from visa-free travel to Slovakia for qualifying short stays.

Canadian passport holders do not require a visa for qualifying stays of up to 90 days in any 180-day period in the Schengen area.

The Embassy states that a Canadian passport used for visa-free travel must remain valid for at least three months after the intended final departure from Slovakia.

Border officials can request evidence of sufficient financial resources, onward or return travel and other information relevant to the planned stay.

Different rules apply to longer stays, employment, residence and other activities that are not covered by the short-stay visa exemption.

Canadian travellers: No visa is currently required for a qualifying short stay, but travellers remain responsible for meeting Slovakia’s and the Schengen area’s current entry conditions.
