Planning your visit
Consular Appointments
Personal visits to the Consular Section must be scheduled electronically in advance.
The Embassy currently requires appointments to be booked exclusively through Serbia’s official electronic consular appointment system.
Applicants should arrive no later than five minutes before their scheduled appointment. The Embassy states that late arrival results in cancellation of the appointment.
If an applicant cannot attend, the appointment should be cancelled through the same system at least two days in advance.
The Embassy does not arrange appointments by telephone or email.
Which services require personal attendance?
The Embassy specifically states that personal attendance is required for passport applications, negative inheritance statements, signature notarization and obtaining a QR code for access to Serbia’s eGovernment portal.
Many other consular procedures do not require a personal visit and can use the procedure published for the particular service.
Check before booking: Do not assume that every consular procedure requires a visit. Review the service instructions first and book an appointment only when personal attendance is required.
Serbian travel documents
Serbian Passport Services
The Embassy accepts applications for Serbian biometric passports from eligible Serbian citizens.
A passport application must be submitted in person. Children must also be present when a passport application is submitted for them.
Applicants must provide their previous Serbian biometric passport, proof of legal status in Canada and the required Serbian civil-status and citizenship documentation under the applicable procedure.
The Embassy currently states that a new passport is normally issued within two months. A passport can be issued more quickly under the urgent procedure when the applicant provides evidence establishing the urgency.
Children born in Canada
The Embassy cannot accept a biometric passport application for a child born in Canada until the child’s birth has been properly registered in Serbia’s vital records.
Name changes after marriage
A person who married in Canada and wants a new passport showing a changed family name must first have the family-name change properly recorded in Serbia’s vital records.
Lost or stolen passports
A lost or stolen Serbian passport should first be reported to the Canadian police. The applicant can then begin the procedure to have the missing passport declared invalid and apply for a replacement passport or an Emergency Travel Document.
Personal attendance required: Biometric passport applications cannot be completed by mail. Check the current documentary requirements and book the required appointment before travelling to Ottawa.
Return to Serbia
Emergency Travel Documents
The Embassy can issue an Emergency Travel Document to eligible Serbian citizens who need to return to Serbia without a valid passport.
The document is intended solely for return to the Republic of Serbia.
It can be issued when a Serbian passport has expired, has been reported lost or stolen, or in other circumstances provided for by Serbian travel-document law.
The Emergency Travel Document is valid for 60 days from the date of issue.
Unlike a biometric passport application, an Emergency Travel Document application can be submitted in person or by mail, provided the applicable requirements are met.
Applicants using the mail procedure must follow the Embassy’s signature-certification requirements and include the required prepaid return envelope and travel information.
Check transit requirements: The Embassy recommends confirming whether a transit visa is required for any country through which the holder will travel when returning to Serbia with an Emergency Travel Document.
Travel to Serbia
Serbia Visa Information for Canadian Travellers
Canadian citizens travelling with ordinary Canadian passports currently benefit from visa-free entry for qualifying short visits to Serbia.
Canadian ordinary passport holders currently do not require a Serbian visa for visits of up to 90 days within a six-month period starting from the date of first entry.
The same published visa exemption of up to 90 days applies to Canadian diplomatic and official passport holders.
Visa-free entry does not remove Serbia’s general border-entry requirements. Travellers should hold an appropriate valid travel document and may be asked for evidence concerning the purpose of the visit, accommodation, sufficient funds, onward or return travel and other entry conditions.
Travellers intending to remain longer or travel for a purpose requiring a different immigration status should check the appropriate Serbian immigration procedure before departure.
Canadian passport holders: A visa is currently not required for qualifying visits of up to 90 days within the applicable six-month period. Verify current entry requirements before travelling.
