Libyan travel documents

Passports and Travel Documents

Libyan citizens in Canada should check the Embassy’s current announcements before beginning a passport application.

The Embassy’s current consular menu identifies the service for issuing a new Libyan passport as temporarily suspended. Applicants should therefore not assume that a new passport application can currently be started in Ottawa.

The Embassy continues to publish information concerning passports already processed and procedures for citizens whose passports have been lost or damaged.

For a lost or damaged passport, the Embassy publishes a procedure requiring supporting evidence including a Canadian police report in applicable cases, proof of Libyan identity and civil-status documentation.

Depending on the circumstances and current service availability, a citizen may be provided with assistance concerning a travel document for return to Libya.

Check current passport availability: Passport services can change. Contact the Embassy before travelling to Ottawa specifically for a new passport application.

Travel to Libya

Libya Entry Visas

Libya operates an electronic visa system for eligible foreign travellers.

The Embassy’s current visa page directs applicants to Libya’s official eVisa application portal, where eligible travellers can begin an electronic visa application.

Applicants can select the appropriate application type for an individual traveller, agency or company and complete the required visa procedure electronically.

Visa eligibility and entry requirements depend on nationality, purpose of travel and current Libyan immigration rules. Travellers should verify the latest requirements before making travel arrangements.

Check current travel requirements: An approved visa does not replace other entry requirements. Verify current passport, immigration and travel conditions before travelling to Libya.

Visitor information

Before You Visit

Check the current Embassy instructions for your exact service before travelling to Ottawa or sending original documents.

Use the new address

The Embassy moved in November 2025. Consular applications and correspondence should use the current Albert Street address rather than the former Laurier Avenue location.

Check service availability

Some services can be temporarily suspended. In particular, applicants should confirm the current availability of new passport and travel-document services before visiting.

Prepare supporting documents

Civil-registration, power-of-attorney and authentication procedures may require original documents, identification, translations and other supporting records.

Canadian documents: Authentication procedures have changed since Canada joined the Apostille Convention. Check the current requirements for your particular document rather than relying on older Embassy instructions that may refer to previous Canadian authentication procedures.
