About the Embassy of Canada to Japan

The Canadian Embassy in Tokyo is Canada’s resident diplomatic mission in Japan.

The embassy supports Canada’s political, economic, security, cultural and people-to-people relationship with Japan and provides Government of Canada services to Canadian citizens visiting or living in the country.

Services at the Canadian Embassy in Tokyo

The embassy provides passport, citizenship, notarial and other consular services for Canadian citizens.

Passport services

Canadian passport applications can be submitted in person by appointment, placed in the embassy drop-off box or sent by traceable mail.

Citizenship services

Eligible paper applications for proof of Canadian citizenship can be mailed to the embassy or submitted in a sealed envelope through the Consular Section drop-off box.

Notarial services

The embassy provides selected notarial services by appointment, including certified copies, witnessing signatures and declarations, marriage affidavits and eligible apostilles.

Marriage abroad

Canadian citizens marrying in Japan may require a marriage affidavit. The embassy provides this service by appointment.

Emergency assistance

Canadian citizens requiring urgent assistance can contact the embassy during business hours. Emergency consular assistance is available 24 hours a day through Canada’s Emergency Watch and Response Centre.

Visa and immigration

Applications to visit, study, work or immigrate to Canada are handled through Immigration, Refugees and Citizenship Canada and its official application channels.

The embassy publishes separate appointment periods for general office business, consular services, passport services and notarial services.

General embassy appointments

General appointments are currently available Monday to Friday from 9:00 a.m. to 5:30 p.m.

Consular appointments

Consular services are currently available by appointment Monday to Friday from 9:30 a.m. to 12:00 p.m. and from 1:30 p.m. to 4:30 p.m.

Passport appointments

Passport services are currently available by appointment Monday to Friday from 9:30 a.m. to 12:00 p.m.

Notarial appointments

Notarial services are currently available by appointment on Monday, Wednesday and Friday from 2:00 p.m. to 4:00 p.m.

No walk-ins for notarial services: The embassy states that walk-in clients cannot be accommodated for notarial services.

Canadian passport services in Tokyo

The embassy offers three current submission options for Canadian passport applications.

Apply in person

Book an appointment to submit your passport application Monday to Friday from 9:30 a.m. to 12:00 p.m.

Use the drop-off box

Complete applications can be placed in the Consular Section drop-off box Monday to Friday from 9:00 a.m. to 4:30 p.m., except on embassy closure dates.

Apply by mail

Applications can be sent by traceable mail to the Embassy of Canada, Consular Section – Passport Services, 7-3-38 Akasaka, Minato-ku, Tokyo 107-8503.

Important: Passport applications should be submitted at least six weeks before your current passport expires or your anticipated departure date. The embassy does not provide expedited passport service. Urgent cases may require a temporary passport or emergency travel document.
