About the Embassy of Canada to Ethiopia

The Canadian Embassy in Addis Ababa is Canada’s resident diplomatic mission in Ethiopia. Canada and Ethiopia established diplomatic relations in 1965.

The embassy supports the bilateral relationship between Canada and Ethiopia and provides Government of Canada services and consular assistance to Canadians in the region.

The embassy is also concurrently accredited to Djibouti and represents Canada to the Intergovernmental Authority on Development. Since 2024, the mission has also been responsible for Canada’s representation in Sudan.

Services at the Canadian Embassy in Addis Ababa

The embassy provides passport, citizenship, notarial and other services for Canadian citizens.

Passport services

Canadian citizens can apply for passport services through the embassy. Applicants presenting documents in person must book an appointment and bring proof that the applicable fees have been paid online.

Citizenship services

Eligible paper applications for proof of Canadian citizenship can be sent to the embassy by traceable courier. Applications can also be dropped off at the embassy’s main gate during published weekday hours.

Notarial services

The embassy provides selected notarial services, including certification of eligible true copies. Payment for notarial services can be made by credit or debit card at the consular window.

Birth and marriage abroad

Official Canadian guidance is available for births and marriages outside Canada, including documentation requirements for Canadians abroad.

Emergency assistance

Canadian citizens requiring urgent help can contact the embassy during business hours. Emergency consular assistance is available 24 hours a day through Canada’s Emergency Watch and Response Centre.

Consular appointments

Consular services are currently available by appointment Monday and Tuesday from 8:30 a.m. to 12:00 p.m. and 1:30 p.m. to 4:30 p.m., and Wednesday and Thursday from 8:30 a.m. to 12:00 p.m.

Friday: The consular section is currently closed on Friday. General embassy appointments remain available on Friday morning.
