About the Swedish Embassy in Ottawa

The Embassy of Sweden in Ottawa is Sweden’s resident diplomatic mission in Canada.

The Embassy represents Sweden in its official relations with Canada and supports political, economic, trade, cultural and other cooperation between the two countries.

It also provides consular assistance and selected administrative services for Swedish citizens in Canada.

Sweden maintains a network of honorary consulates across Canada. However, the Embassy in Ottawa is the only Swedish authority in Canada that accepts applications for ordinary Swedish passports and national ID cards.

Swedish citizens can apply for ordinary Swedish passports at the Embassy. Applications require an appointment and personal attendance.

National ID cards

Eligible Swedish citizens can also apply for Swedish national ID cards at the Embassy in Ottawa.

Coordination numbers

The Embassy can request a Swedish coordination number for an eligible person who intends to apply for a passport or national ID card at the Embassy.

Emergency assistance

Swedish citizens can contact the Embassy for appropriate consular assistance in emergencies and other situations abroad.

Emergency passports

Emergency passport services are available under applicable Swedish rules. Some authorized honorary consulates in Canada can also issue emergency passports.

Migration appointments

Certain physical migration-related appointments can still take place in Ottawa, although migration cases for applicants residing in Canada are handled by the Embassy of Sweden in Washington, D.C.

Swedish Passports and National ID Cards

The Embassy in Ottawa is the only Swedish passport authority in Canada.

All applicants, including children, must personally visit the Embassy when applying for a Swedish passport or national ID card.

A booked appointment is required. Passport appointments are made through the Embassy’s online booking system.

The Embassy currently states that new passport appointments are released on the first weekday of each month.

First Swedish passport

A Swedish citizen who has never held a Swedish passport or national ID card and has never been registered in Sweden must normally have a Swedish coordination number before applying.

This requirement also applies to children born abroad to Swedish citizens when they do not already have the necessary Swedish registration and coordination number.

In Canada, a coordination number for this purpose can only be requested through the Embassy in Ottawa, and the Embassy will request one only when the person intends to apply for a passport or national ID card at the Embassy.

Personal attendance required: Swedish passport and national ID card applications cannot be submitted through an honorary consulate in Canada. Applicants must attend the Embassy in Ottawa.

Visa and residence matters

Migration Services for Applicants in Canada

Responsibility for Swedish migration cases involving applicants residing in Canada changed in June 2025.

Since June 16, 2025, the Embassy of Sweden in Washington, D.C. has been responsible for all migration-related matters for applicants residing in Canada.

This includes residence-permit matters involving study, work, family reunification and extended visits. The Washington Embassy also processes Schengen visa applications submitted by residents of Canada.

Applicants do not necessarily need to travel to Washington. When the Swedish Migration Agency requires a physical appointment, certain interviews and procedures can still take place at the Embassy in Ottawa.

However, communication about migration cases and the booking of migration appointments must be directed to the Embassy in Washington at visa.washington@gov.se.

Schengen visa applications from Canada are submitted through the designated VFS Global Visa Application Centres and processed by the Embassy of Sweden in Washington, D.C.

Migration cases: Do not contact the Ottawa Embassy to manage a Swedish residence-permit or Schengen visa case. The responsible authority for applicants residing in Canada is the Embassy of Sweden in Washington, D.C.

Sweden Visa Information for Canadian Travellers

Canadian citizens currently benefit from visa-free travel to Sweden for qualifying short stays.

Canadian citizens do not currently require a visa to visit Sweden for stays of 90 days or less.

Sweden is part of the Schengen area, and the applicable Schengen short-stay rules continue to apply to visa-exempt travellers.

Travellers planning a longer stay or activities requiring residence authorization must follow the appropriate Swedish immigration procedure.

Foreign residents of Canada whose nationality requires a Schengen visa submit applications through VFS Global. These applications are processed by the Embassy of Sweden in Washington, D.C.
